IEEE-1394, (Firewire), is a low-cost, high-bandwidth isochronous
(real-time) data transfer standard. It was developed by the
Apple Computer company as a consumer data transfer standard.
It has been adopted by several companies as an interfacing technology
for machine vision systems, and simple device networking. Industrial
FireWire cameras, are becoming very popular, particularly
in scientific imaging. When specifiying a FireWire camera
for vision applications, DCAM compliance is an important feature
to take into consideration. DCAM is a new protocol that describes
data exchange over the IEEE-1394 bus, and defines the transmission
of uncompressed video streams. This standard (and also the IIDC
standard) are aimed at industrial imaging applications.
The
new IEEE-1394b standard is a high speed revision of the original
which allows for faster transfer rates of up to 800 Mbytes/sec.
