Cameras Using the FireWire™ Transfer Protocol

IEEE-1394, (Firewire™), is a low-cost, high-bandwidth isochronous (real-time) data transfer standard. It was developed by the Apple Computer company as a consumer data transfer standard. It has been adopted by several companies as an interfacing technology for machine vision systems, and simple device networking. Industrial FireWire™ cameras, are becoming very popular, particularly in scientific imaging. When specifiying a FireWire™ camera for vision applications, DCAM compliance is an important feature to take into consideration. DCAM is a new protocol that describes data exchange over the IEEE-1394 bus, and defines the transmission of uncompressed video streams. This standard (and also the IIDC standard) are aimed at industrial imaging applications.

The new IEEE-1394b standard is a high speed revision of the original which allows for faster transfer rates of up to 800 Mbytes/sec.
