The
CDI is a unique (and patented) lighting system from Northeast
Robotics with unrivalled performance in the illumination of
difficult reflective objects. It combines a diffuse dome illuminator,
with an on-axis light to fill in the camera hole at the top.
These two light sources can be balanced to achieve a number
of different effects that cannot be achieved with other illumination
systems. The CDI is available in both LED and fibre-optic variants.

Benefits
of using the CDI Illuminator vs. systems.
Power supplies / Light sources
Below
you can see the resulting image effects when using different
illumination techniques to examine the surface of a ball
bearing for defects. In all but the CDI, you can see the
lighting system reflected in the ball bearing, obscuring
the true surface detail of the object.

The LED version of the CDI requires a variable
power supply in order to balance the two light sources. This
could be either the NER variable power supply, or the Gardasoft
600 variable lighting controller.
The fibre-optic version requires a light
source that we can also supply.
